Ghoulmaster’s Haunted Playhouse Review
Halloween Time is here and the Ghoulmaster’s Haunted Playhouse is open!
What! The Ghoulmaster in space looking for fresh “space dust” to save Halloween!? This is a Halloween story from the fringes of Hollywood where the creepy, yet delightful, put on a spectacle you’ll never forget!
The Ghoulmaster, self proclaimed drag queen, master of horror is the creation of entertainer Pete Carter. Pete was born to perform, create and design visually stunning entertainment and Ghoulmaster’s Haunted Playhouse delivers.
In a wacky show full of adult humor, amazing costumes and enough Halloween spirit to choke on; the Ghoulmaster has been given the task of making Halloween happen each year. When a big problem arises he calls upon his clan of ghostly spirits who reside in his old mansion to save Halloween. While much of the show’s direction stays on track with saving Halloween, the Ghoulmaster does shock with some serious social topics. Messages of acceptance for people as individuals, not what label they are given is a running theme throughout the production. While going on this journey with the Ghoulmaster there are lots of sexual
references and adult language in step with Carter’s comparison of his show to the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” meets “Pee Wee’s Playhouse.” (That would be the very first Pee Wee’s Playhouse, the raunchy one for adults). With plenty of surprises there isn’t a moment that goes by that you don’t think “how did I end up here” and how in the world is the Ghoulmaster going to save Halloween!? That’s no accident, with the production fueled to some extent by crowdfunding the Haunted playhouse is really a dream come true and inspiration to others that you make your luck. Carter’s wild imagination is probably only second to his vision and ability to bring Ghoulmaster’s Haunted Playhouse to the stage.
I once went to a bar in San Fransisco only to be surprised with a puppet show for adults. It was memorable and I would say that “magic” you hope to find but rarely ever do. This is Carter’s show, magic, that perfect twist of strange that you didn’t know you were looking for; challenging, entertaining, funny in a beautiful package of visual grandeur. I do admit I appreciate creativity that pushes the envelope, my grandmother or conservative America might walk out but the Ghoulmaster addresses that at the intermission in a horrific yet oh so perfect fashion for Halloween.
GhoulMaster’s Haunted Playhouse runs in Hollywood through the end of October 2015 at the Hudson Mainstage Theater. While the website says PG-13 and “cool” parents should bring their kids for the positive message, I warn that if watching the movie Borat with your kids makes you uncomfortable, best leave your young behind and make this a date night because this show is Rated -R by MPAA standards.
